As a personal trainer and a small business owner, I depend on the building that my gym is located in to make a living. When something breaks down, like my furnace once did, in the middle of the winter mind you- life can become significantly more difficult.
The date was January 27th in Bozeman, Montana and it was about 25 degrees below zero outside when I realized that my furnace had gone out. The surprising thing is how quickly the temperature dropped after it happened. It was a burned out fan motor so with insurance it was cheaper to just replace the unit than have it repaired. Of course that meant we were without a furnace until this one could be removed and replaced. The service repairman initially estimated that the furnace would not be replaced for at least 1 full day. Well my job as a personal trainer is to help people stay positive and on track, so when I realized that it was getting colder I just kept trucking along on my regular routine.
As luck would have it, the service repairman was delayed longer than initially anticipated and we had to go two days without heat. The pipes were starting to freeze and we had to put an electric heater under the sink and in the basement where the pipes were at risk of freezing and bursting, which would have caused permanent damage. Ideally we would have turned the water off so we wouldn’t have to worry about pipes freezing, but we couldn’t be open without a bathroom available for people to use. With this in mind we decided to take the risk while doing everything we could to keep the pipes warm.
Keeping Warm and Keeping the Gym Open
I work in a small gym so we only have two rooms to worry about. We put some electric heaters, like these, in the room with the weights and exercise equipment. The actual gymnasium was the real nightmare. Since the ceilings are so high it was impossible to get it warm with electric heat. Not to mention the electricity bill we were piling on ourselves quite rapidly. I just wanted to do whatever it would take to keep the doors open. I didn’t want to let down any of my clients. And besides, it was a great exercise in staying positive and resilient. So the gymnasium stayed pretty cold, but the weight room actually was quite nice. All of those bodies working hard really heated up the place and the electric heaters gave it the extra push to make quite comfortable.
Now Comes the Worst Part…
Then the worst happened. One of the water lines under the bathroom sink burst and started spraying all over the bathroom. Luckily my business partner and friend Andy was savvy enough to turn the water off and fix the pipe. He apparently had some plumbing experience in his background. By early afternoon on the second day the service men showed up and got right to work. They went right down in the basement and started to uninstall the old furnace. It was a shame to see it go like that when the only thing wrong was a fan motor, but it sure is nice having a brand new heater. They finished up in about 3 hours and believe me, I’ve never been so relieved! The only thing left for me to do was to order some new 20x20x1 furnace filters which I checked out here and had them delivered right to the gym. Although I certainly hope to never go through this experience again, as I mentioned, it was definitely a lesson in quick-thinking and a reminder to not take the staples of our lives, such as furnaces, for granted. The heat has never felt quite as sweet as it did on that first day with the new furnace.
Vacation times can be some of the most detrimental times of year to our health and fitness lifestyles. As I’ve blogged about here before, having an embedded, systematic routine that you can unconsciously and easily adhere to on a daily basis — for months and years on end — is the true formula for successful wait list and a healthy lifestyle.
That’s where the danger of vacations lies because, by their very nature, they disrupt your already established routine. You’re in a different area with different stores, different food, different transportation as well as different recreational options.
While this is certainly a blessing, in many cases the change of circumstances can be enough to knock us off the good habits we have painstakingly created. A week full of junk food and lethargy can undo months of progress. The ramifications aren’t so much for the weight you’ll gain or the damage you’ll do to your body, but more for the breakdown that occurs to your daily habits. It makes it harder for you to get back into your healthy regiment when you’re back home.
That’s why it’s a great idea to stay physical active on your vacation and minimize the damage. Here are some great ways to do that:
Since a typical vacation spot for many people is on the beach by the sea or at a large lake, taking daily swimming sessions is a great opportunity. Swimming is one of the healthiest activities that a person can take part in. I mean, have you seen swimmer’s physiques?
Swimming exercises all the muscles — upper and lower body — and can also be a challenging aerobic or anaerobic workout depending on your style. If you’re staying at the beach, an early morning swim through the surf is an awesome way to kick your day off right! You’ll feel fresh, refreshed, healthy, vibrant and ready to tackle another fun day of activity and relaxation!
Jogging is another great activity to partake on when you’re enjoying your summer getaway. I don’t recommend jogging as exercise so much normally because of the risk of repetitive stress injuries that can occur with all these feet impacts on concrete and pavement. However, if you’re vacationing at the beach then the sand provides an idealic surface to enjoy a brisk jog!
As the sand is softer and has much more give than concrete or blacktop, you’ll reduce the risk of sprained ankles or sore feet. In fact, it’s likely that you’ll feet will feel great. Since you’ll be running barefoot, all sorts of little muscles in your feet and toes will be getting exercise and stimulation that they’re not normally accustomed to!
What’s more, because the sand gives so much and doesn’t let you “bounce” back up, you’ll find that your leg muscles have to work even hard to run the same distance. Highly recommended.
Looking for something more intense? Try running sprints up the sand dunes on your next beach vacation. Though, take care that being on the dunes is allowed by the local authorities. The last thing you would want to do is in any way damage the ecosystem!
While jogging and swimming are great activities to take in early in the morning, you’ll still have plenty of hours of daylight to fill! Sure, it’s great to sit and relax by the beach, wade in the water, and maybe have a cold drink now and then. But, if you’re used to a fit and healthy lifestyle like me, then you’ll soon feel your blood start to bubble a bit and feel restless. That means it’s time to get the body moving!
Since you’ll still be in vacation mode, it’s ideal to do semi-relaxing activities that keep you moving but don’t exhaust you. That’s why I hardily recommend golfing to stay fit. On my recent vacation to Mexico, I stayed at the Riviera Nayarit Resort which features four, beautiful, well-designed golf courses. I ended up playing 18 holes every day I was there save the last day! Highly recommended!
