Health Coaching Australia

The HCA model of health coaching enables health practitioners to undertake three critical tasks to empower clients or patients to engage in their own health management. These tasks are 1) assisting clients to decide that it is in their own interests to engage in health behaviour change, 2) increasing clients' chances of success by identifying and addressing barriers to change, and 3) providing treatment recommendations and health education in a way that doesn't inadvertently create resistance. Although powerful in all aspects of health and lifestyle management, health coaching is proving to be particularly successful in the area of chronic disease prevention and self-management and with the World Health Organisation predicting that by 2020 ¾ of all deaths will be from chronic disease, changing the health behaviour of the population is becoming all the more critical.

Heart Research Centre: Motivational Interviewing (MI): An essential tool to help patients improve their health behaviours Melbourne, 26 August 2010

MI is an evidence-based technique for helping people change unhealthy behaviours in favour of healthier lifestyles. These techniques aim to elicit behaviour change by helping patients to explore and resolve ambivalence to change (Rollnick & Miller, 1995). MI is based on specific interviewing styles and change processes that acknowledge the patient's stage of readiness to change a particular behaviour.

Chronic illness can produce considerable personal, social and financial hardship for those with such diseases. Many patients find it difficult to adopt and sustain lifestyle changes. Health professionals who use motivational interviewing techniques can help patients overcome their resistance to adopting healthy behaviours.
