Walking Packages

Walking Packages are designed for Local Governments, PCPs and Community Health to learn from example initiatives to implement similar programs. Walking Packages topics include: walking infrastructure, walkability, audit tools and walking strategies. Several case studies are included to provide examples of current walking strategies and implemented plans.

Walking Groups and Programs

Looks at four walking programs in Victoria and how they engage, promote and sustain participation from a range of target groups. Access the Package.

Active Transport

Active transport is any journey that relies more on walking, cycling and using public transport and less on using private vehicles allowing us to get from one point to another. It's a great way to fit physical activity into your daily life. Active transport reduces noise pollution, green house gas emissions and congestion on the roads.

Includes Moreland City Council walking initiatives and Sustainability Victoria. Access the Package.

Audit Tools

Walking audit tools are used to assess the walkability of a city, town, or neighbourhood. The whole community should be involved in the development of walking infrastructure changes. Walking audit tools are used to ensure walking paths and facilities are made accessible for all people.

The following audit tools can be used for assessing signage, routes and infrastructure. Different tools may be required to ensure the sufficient level of detail is met to identify potential changes needed for pedestrians to get to their desired destination, safely and comfortably. Access the package.

Walkability

Walkability refers to the quality of the built, natural, and social environment, and infrastructure that encourages people to get around on foot. While a community may contain all these elements there is also the need for people to want to walk. Pedestrians need to feel safe and secure and have the confidence to walk to their desired destination. Includes the City of Geelong and the Kew Junction Walkability and Wayfinding Study. Access the package.

Walking Strategies

A walking strategy aims to build a supportive social, built and natural environment to encourage and support walking. The infrastructure of a community can limit the number of people walking, or can ensure the community has great access for all pedestrians to get to their desired location. Includes Bendigo City Council and City of Darebin. Access the package.
